Grand Designs Drinking Game

The Boy and I have been really into Grand Designs lately, and have just started watching the newest season. We’re still a long way from buying a place, let alone building anything anywhere near the scale of what you see on the show, but it’s fun to dream.

When you’ve watched a few seasons, you start to see some patterns that come up in most episodes – and this is what started the Grand Designs drinking game. I should point out that as we’re not big drinkers we just take a sip of wine for each ‘drink’ – there’s usually 5+ drinks per episode, so doing full shots would get messy quite quickly!

Take a drink if/when:

  • the client has a hopelessly unrealistic budget/timeline
  • the couple (it’s almost always a couple) fall pregnant during the episode
  • Kevin says something snarky
  • Kevin demonstrates some kind of fancy new product or uses random objects to demonstrate a point
  • it rains or snows when the house isn’t watertight
  • the client has to give up on self-managing and hires a real project manager
  • the client decides to fire the architect to save money
  • there’s a delay due to dealing with water in the groundworks
  • there’s a delay due to glass not arriving on time
  • they decide to not divulge the final cost

I think there have been episodes where all of these cases have occurred!

Jammin’

This weekend I made some jam, using the recipe from Frankie magazine. It’s actually surprising easy, and set perfectly with the natural pectin from added lemon juice and pips. My only problem was that it got hot far too quickly (I blame my temperamental electric stove) and started burning slightly on the bottom. It ended up pretty alright though.

The issue came with some adorable stickers to put on the jam jars – I might have to design my own next time.

There was also a recipe for jammy almond biscuits using the jam – mine are a bit misshapen, but they were delicious!

My mum’s blackberry tree is starting to fruit – can’t wait to experiment with other kinds of jam!

Happy Father’s Day!

I hope everyone is having a lovely Father’s Day, especially all the fathers out there! I’ll be celebrating with my parents tomorrow night as they’ve just gotten back from a holiday, but this morning The Boy and I put on brunch for his parents and sister. On Mother’s Day we did a fry up, so this time we decided to go sweet and make pikelets.

A sweet and simple brunch:

  • make some pancakes/pikelets/crepes (seriously, make the batter from scratch – it’s easy and so much nicer than the weird packet stuff)
  • cut up some fresh fruit and berries (we splurged on some bananas, and strawberries are in season at the moment)
  • condiments of choice (we had maple syrup, honey, lemon juice and sugar)
  • pot full of tea or coffee, or orange juice

Shoes shoes shoes

Recently I had a conversation with friends where I boastingly guestimated that I owned only around 10 pairs of shoes. Today I decided to actually go through what I had properly – apparently I’m a liar, because I appear to have over 20 pairs.

I wear three of those (black ballet flats, blue flats, black flat boots) 95% of the time and really can’t justify (or easily store) 20+ pairs of shoes, so I decided to do a bit of a cull. Here’s what I ended up with:

  • 1 pair of jogging shoes
  • 1 pair of thongs (need replacing with something nicer and more comfortable)
  • 3 pairs of flats (black, blue, yellow)
  • 1 pair of low wedges (aqua)
  • 6 pairs of pumps with stiletto heels of varying heights (yellow patent, nude patent, pink patent, red suede, grey suede)
  • 1 pair of black strappy heels (need replacing with something more comfy)
  • 1 pair of peeptoes (yellow patent)
  • 2 pairs of boots (both black, one with heels one without)
  • 1 pair of wedge ankle boots (black)

I ended up also getting rid of the white peeptoes, wedge sandals and brown boots in this picture as they’re all falling apart and haven’t seen much wear in the past year.

That leaves me with 17 pairs of shoes. Not quite the 10 I was boasting about but at least it all fits nicely into my wardrobe now. There’s a few ‘essentials’ I feel like I’m missing (sandals, nice sneakers, cowboy boots) but generally I feel like this is enough shoes for me.

How many pairs of shoes do you have?
