Croquembouche

So one of my resolutions for this year was to make a croquembouche. Well I’ve now I’ve done it!

Oh right, you want to see the whole thing? Uh, okay.

Believe it or no, this is its 'good' side.

So yeah, I did say it didn’t have to be a good croquembouche, so it still counts. Part of the issue was my confidence in constructing the thing completely freehand (if the base is already not a nice circle you’re not off to a good start), and part was the heat (exacerbated by the turkey also roasting in the oven at the time). We tried to disguise the lopsidedness with lots of spun sugar, but it’s still quite clearly a little unbalanced.

This was in fact my croquembouche at its prettiest – soon after the sugar started melting the the slope more pronounced, until it decided to collapse completely before the guests even arrived. It still tasted delicious though! Props to The Boy who helped construct and Miss N who made the delicious custard filling and did the spun sugar.

Still, who makes a perfect croquembouche on their first try? (Please don’t comment if you have, I’d prefer not to speak to you).

This was for The Boy and I’s first big Christmas dinner party, hence the excuse for going over the top with food, among other things. More photos and video to come!

This week

1. Busy busy; 2. Miss T’s desserts; 3. Daffodil Day;
4. Instax wall; 5. Jeff’s chargrilled beef baguette

It’s been a terribly hectic week, made worse by our broken water heater and having a day off sick. I’ve been working half the weekend to make up for it, whilst trying to fit in hosting a pizza night (of which I managed to only take a photo of the dessert, shown with Miss T above), City to Surf and all the usual weekend things. Now though I think it’s time to put away the work and enjoy a bit of Doctor Who!

This week in photos

In an effort to blog and take photos more often, I’m going to try and post a few photos every Sunday from the past week.

Loving these big mushrooms! This got turned into a vegetarian stirfry with some marinated tofu

Found the most adorable tiny pears - just right for poaching.

Midwinter feast dinner party - lamb shanks, veggies and potato two ways

Also mulled cider!

I managed to appear in one photo!

Three candles for three birthdays

My birthday present - an Instax Mini!

Fabulous falooda at my auntie's place

Cake with Cake at Sherbet

Today I met with the ever adorable Miss Cake for tea and cake at Sherbert in Maylands.

It’s only a five minute walk from my apartment, but I’d never been there before – I noticed a bunch of other cool looking shops and cafes in the area that I didn’t know where there, just because I never seem to cross the train tracks!

Sherbert all you really want in a tea-and-cake place really – small and cozy, with lots of different cakes and cupcakes (but get in early, they seem to sell out of the more popular flavours quickly). I like that they do loose leaf teas – I always feel a tad ripped off when I get tea in a cafe and it just ends up being a Twinings tea bag. They also seem to have some breakfast and lunch options, which I’ll definitely have to be back to try someday.

Coconut and vanilla cake

Lemon, pear and polenta cake

The servings of cake were generous (I didn’t even manage to finish mine) and delicious, with a side of cream. A bit of an indulgence, but well worth it!

Miss Cake

Sherbert is apparently always packed on a Sunday, so we nabbed a seat outside. Even with the cold and drizzly weather it seemed cozy with our tea and cakes. The street and train line don’t really go with the ambiance of the place, which seems more suited to a Melbourne style laneway, but I think the baked goods make it worth it. I’ll definitely be returning to this one!
